I like to use the phrase "if they built it, someone somewhere has rallied it," by which I mean I believe nearly every car ever built has been rallied at some point somewhere in the world. But is this true? I invite you to help me find out. All you have to do is name cars and I'll see if they've been rallied.
The stipulations:
For starters, I want to specify that my assertion applies strictly to
cars.
While there are rally trucks and SUVs out there I'm less confident in their diversity (for example, I don't think anyone's rallied a Ford Excursion), and while there are
!!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!!
or
!!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!!
rally minivans out there I've yet to hear of a rally Grand Caravan. That said if you feel like naming a truck just for gits and shiggles I'll check it against rally raid records.
Other qualifications: They must have built at least 5,000 of the car, no sneaking one by me by saying something like Hennessy Venom. Also, let's keep it to cars less than 50 years old. No electric cars, though hybrids are allowed.
What qualifies as a rally:
Stage rallies, obviously, rally raids, targas, and major adventure rallies like the Mongol Rally or Gazelle Rally are all fair game. Quasi-legal road rallies like Gumball, Bullrun, and Cannonball will not be included.
Alright, those are the rules, let's see what you've got.

I can't find any IS300/Altezza rally cars, unless rallyx or road rallies count. If road rallies count, I've been in a road rally (kinda) in my IS300

I'm asking the rally experts for more info as well, but so far...
Pinto: Road rallied as shown by Shoopdawoop, also stage rallied as the Mercury Bobcat, and the famed Ford Escort rally cars were essentially Pintos with different body work.
Mustang II: It's at least been rallied in 1/64th scale form. My Googling was thrown off by the fact that there was a factory "Rallye" trim package offered for the II (which inevitably was spelled "Rally" on many web pages. Also the regular Mustang has been rallied from the first gen to the latest body style, so those keep showing up in my searches as well. I know there was a guy in Missouri building a Mustang II rally car as recently as 2011...
Crown Victoria: Vicki's been around a long time and that served me well. Here's a 1954 Crown Vic from La Carrera Panamerica, though that breaks my 50 year rule. Again, I'm checking with the experts.

American Rallycross (more like autocross on dirt) Trans Am.

Nothing so far, though I wouldn't be surprised if someone's entered one in a Targa at some point. I'll keep looking

I'd be curious of any Avant that was rallied. There has got to be some RS2 pics out there.

CR-Z did Pikes which isn't quite the same thing but the fucker keeps popping up when I search "CR-Z rally." I feel like I remember hearing about a CR-Z rally car but I haven't found it so far. I did find this Martini CR-Z, but that's like the Subaru fanboi who paints his car like McRae's gets some Rally Armor mudflaps and says he has a "rally car."
![]() 12/03/2013 at 14:35 |

There may be some cars that haven't been rallied, but there's no such thing as a Volvo that hasn't been rallied. Here's your Amazon.
![]() 12/03/2013 at 14:36 |
|
Yeah, I knew about Pike's. Didn't know if you wanted to include that. Didn't know about the second one, and I'm not sure I wanted to...
Maybe I should get a CRZ and rally it?
![]() 12/03/2013 at 14:36 |
|
Ahhhh yes. Thank you. I know all volvos have raced on dirt, but hadn't found an actual rally version.
![]() 12/03/2013 at 14:36 |
|
I know there aren't any rallies in CT, dirt hooning doesn't count as rallying.
![]() 12/03/2013 at 14:40 |
|
oh come on now! It was competitive, just not sanctioned :(
![]() 12/03/2013 at 14:42 |

Saw this one and immediately said "Ah crap." No sign of a rally Cube, making it just about the only Nissan that hasn't been rallied

Ypres Rally Lotus Exige

mine too...the one I ran looked like this
FWD flavor. Took the oil pan out on a rock. This event was like a precursor to LeMons rally. $300 top spend on the car
![]() 12/03/2013 at 15:28 |

The problem with Morgans is it's hard to tell if it's over 50 years old or not.

Huh. Didn't find those in my searches.
![]() 12/03/2013 at 17:00 |

Might as well drop this Maserati in here.

From veteran rally racer Jimmy Brandt over on Special Stage:
I have rallied in a Pinto. I have rolled in a Pinto.
Guys here in MI rallied an ex-DNR Crown Vic.

SO MUCH WIN!
![]() 12/03/2013 at 18:12 |

This one technically never competed, as far as I know
![]() 12/03/2013 at 18:13 |

Also, I'm not sure if this still counts as a Pantera or not.
![]() 12/03/2013 at 18:29 |

Grey area. Fortunately the Pantera has seen it's share of rally action
![]() 12/03/2013 at 18:36 |

Not that I could find, though for some reason this Mitsubishi kept showing up in my google searches
![]() 12/03/2013 at 18:39 |

Huh, the man in the wheelchair has a race suit on. I bet he's a codriver. Thats pretty cool

Prius Rally? Prius Rally.
![]() 12/03/2013 at 18:48 |
|
In this case you're right, but there are quite a few paraplegic rally drivers out there. Here in the states we have Jari Hamalainen, who last year at the 100 Acre Wood rally was 2nd fastest 2WD and 7th fastest overall out of 35 cars in regional competition, in an underpowered BMW 3 series (non-M) with a slushbox and poor gear ratios.

I didn't mean to sound condescending at all. That's awesome though!
![]() 12/03/2013 at 18:53 |

You'd be right. I remembered that right after posting it. Oh well.

Confirmation on a Mustang II. That's the clean sweep!
Don Rathbarger the Snow Drift Organizer has rallied Mustang and a Mustang II.

![]() 12/04/2013 at 22:02 |

Yup. The Nissan Pube- er, Cube is unrallied.

Rally El Camino I imagine would be a handful with no weight over the drive axel. Closest I could find is a desert racer.

I'm sure I've heard of one, but I can't find any evidence. I'll check with the experts.
I do know there are a few Holden utes rallying in Australia
![]() 12/04/2013 at 23:44 |

Don't bring Austrailia into this. They have a car culture that is envied the world over.

Mine, too. Mercedes made a limited number of 5.0 liter homologation specials of the SLC for participation in the WRC. I am presently building one of these for vintage rally. Check it out at www.slc4dirt.wordpress.com
